CAA Portal for Indian Citizenship : On March 12, 2024, the Center inaugurated a fresh website dedicated to individuals interested in applying for citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) introduced the guidelines for the act’s execution. According to the updated regulations, individuals belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, Christian communities, or those from Bangladesh or Afghanistan who arrived in India prior to December 31, 2014, are eligible to seek Indian citizenship under the CAA provisions without the obligation of presenting a valid passport from their country of origin or a valid Indian visa. The Citizenship Amendment Act of 2019 includes a provision outlining the process for applying for Indian citizenship. This provision is applicable only to individuals who arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014, and belong to the Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, or Parsi communities originating from Bangladesh, Afghanistan, or Pakistan. CAA Portal Objective

Individuals who have faced persecution in Afghanistan, Pakistan, or Bangladesh because of their religious convictions are eligible to seek Indian citizenship through the Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA) website, accessible at https://indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in. The six minority groups specifically identified as targets for persecution are Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Hindus.

Documents indicating that one or more of the applicant’s parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents were citizens of the specified countries are also acceptable. These records remain valid even after their expiration date.

CAA Portal Documents Required

The following documents are necessary for the CAA Portal:

  • 1. Passport size Photograph
  • 2. Mobile number
  • 3. Copy of passport issued by the governments of Pakistan, Afghanistan, or Bangladesh
  • 4. Birth certificate
  • 5. Any other identity document, land or tenancy records, or documents demonstrating the citizenship of the applicant’s parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents in one of the three countries. These documents will be accepted even if they have expired, as per the requirements.

Additionally, applicants must provide proof that they entered India before December 31, 2014. This can be shown through an immigration stamp and visa, a registration certificate from the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO), a slip from an Indian census enumerator, or a government-issued document such as an Indian driving license, Aadhaar number, ration card, or marriage certificate.

Individuals belonging to persecuted minorities, including Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian communities, are eligible to apply on the CAA portal.
